Learning how to smoke weed is simple once you know the basics. You take a slow, gentle draw, pull the smoke into your lungs with a breath of fresh air, and let it go after a second or two.
What changes from one device to the next is everything around that draw: how you pack it, how you light it, and how you control airflow.
This guide covers every common way to smoke or vape, from joints and pipes to bongs, vape pens, and wax. It also covers the questions that come with it: how much to take the first time, how to stop coughing, how to keep the smell down, and what to do when you have no papers or pipe.
The short version
Do:
- Grind your flower fine and even (slightly coarser for pipes and bongs)
- Take small, slow hits, especially at first
- Hold smoke for only 1 to 2 seconds
- Wait 10 to 15 minutes before deciding on more
- Keep water nearby
- Buy from a licensed source where cannabis is legal
Don’t:
- Hold your breath as long as you can (it adds tar, not much high)
- Pack a bowl so tight that air can’t pass through
- Smoke from foil, painted cans, plastic, or printed paper
- Drive for at least 6 hours after smoking
- Mix cannabis with alcohol your first time
What you’ll need
Most methods need four things:
- Flower, the dried, cured buds
- A grinder, or clean fingers and patience. A good weed grinder breaks buds into even pieces that burn steadily. A fine grind suits joints. Too fine can clog a bowl or get pulled through a screen, and too coarse makes a joint burn unevenly.
- A lighter or hemp wick. Butane lighters are the default. A hemp wick gives a softer flame, keeps butane away from your face, and makes it easier to light one edge of a bowl.
- The piece itself: papers, a pipe, a bong, or a vaporizer.
Here’s how the main methods compare.
| Method | Best for | Learning curve | Smell | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-roll or joint | Sharing, first-timers (pre-rolls) | Rolling takes practice | Strong | Hard to control dose once lit |
| Pipe or one-hitter | Solo sessions, small doses | Low | Moderate | You need to learn the carb |
| Bong or bubbler | Cooler, smoother hits | Moderate | Moderate | Hits can be bigger than they feel |
| Dry-herb vaporizer | Less smoke, less smell | Low to moderate | Low | Heats flower without burning it |
| Vape cart pen | Discretion, convenience | Very low | Low | Buy regulated carts only |
| Dab rig or dab pen | Experienced users | High | Low to moderate | Concentrates are far stronger than flower |
How to inhale weed properly
The same technique works for every method. Most beginner problems (not feeling anything, coughing fits, harsh hits) come from getting it wrong.
- Draw into your mouth first. Pull slowly and gently, like sipping through a straw. Stop before it feels big.
- Take a breath of fresh air. Take the piece away and inhale normally. This pulls the smoke from your mouth into your lungs and cools and dilutes it. Holding smoke in your mouth and blowing it out (“puffing”) delivers very little THC.
- Hold for 1 to 2 seconds. That’s enough.
- Exhale slowly and completely.
The old belief that holding smoke longer gets you higher doesn’t hold up well. Studies that controlled puff size and breath-hold time found puff size affected how high people got, while holding smoke in longer added little.
Most of the THC is absorbed in the first few seconds. Holding longer mainly gives tar and particulates more time to settle. Research comparing cannabis and tobacco smoke found the deep inhalation and long breath-holds typical of cannabis smoking deposited much more tar per puff.
For the respiratory side, see how smoking cannabis affects your lungs.
How to smoke a joint

A joint is ground flower rolled in thin paper, usually with a small cardboard filter (a “crutch”) at the mouth end. The crutch keeps the shape and keeps plant bits out of your mouth.
If you want to roll your own, follow our guide on how to roll a joint. Otherwise, a dispensary pre-roll is the easiest start.
To smoke it:
- Light the tip evenly. Hold the flame just below the tip and rotate the joint until the whole end glows. Don’t jam the flame into the paper, which scorches it.
- Take a gentle draw while it’s lit, then your breath of fresh air.
- Watch for “canoeing,” when one side burns faster than the other. Dab the fast side with a licked fingertip, or touch the flame briefly to the slow side.
- Rest it on an ashtray between hits. Don’t hold it upright for long, because the ember can drop.
If you won’t finish it, press the cherry out in an ashtray and save the joint for later in a sealed container.
Blunts and spliffs smoke the same way. A blunt is rolled in tobacco leaf or a cigar wrap, so it contains nicotine and is bigger and slower to finish. Dry wraps crack, so rehydrate blunt wraps before rolling.
A spliff mixes tobacco and cannabis in a regular paper. Both add nicotine, which is highly addictive, so it’s worth knowing which one you’re being handed.
How to smoke weed from a pipe
Hand pipes (spoons, sherlocks, steamrollers) are the simplest reusable option. Most have a bowl, a mouthpiece, and a small side hole called the carb.
- Pack the bowl loosely. Drop in ground flower and press lightly so it holds together. Air needs to pass through. If you can’t draw through the pipe, it’s packed too tight. A small screen or one larger piece of bud at the bottom keeps ash out of your mouth.
- Cover the carb with a finger.
- Corner the bowl. Touch the flame to one edge of the flower, not the whole surface, while drawing gently. This burns a little at a time and leaves fresh (“green”) flower for the next person or your next hit.
- Release the carb. Once the chamber has smoke, lift your finger and finish the draw. This clears the smoke into your mouth. Then take your breath of fresh air.
- Wait before the next hit.
One-hitters (also called bats or chillums) hold a single small hit, which makes them useful for controlling dose. There’s no carb: you light the end and draw. See our one-hitter picks if you want one.
Resin builds fast and makes hits harsh, so clean your glass pipe regularly with isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt.
How to smoke a bong or bubbler
A bong pulls smoke through water before it reaches you. The water cools it, which is why bong hits feel smoother. That smoothness can fool you: a smooth hit can still be a very big one.
- Fill with water until the downstem (the tube holding the bowl) sits about an inch under the surface. Too much and it splashes into your mouth. Too little and you lose the cooling. People disagree about warm or cold water in a bong, but cold is the usual choice.
- Pack the bowl loosely, same as a pipe.
- Seal your mouth inside the mouthpiece, not pressed against the outside.
- Light the bowl and draw slowly. The water bubbles and the chamber fills with smoke.
- Clear it. Pull the bowl out (or release the carb, if your bong has one) and inhale the rest of the chamber.
- Change the water after every session. Stale bong water tastes bad and grows bacteria.
A bubbler is a hand pipe with a small water chamber. It works the same way, with smaller hits.
No bong? You can make a water bottle bong in a few minutes. Just keep the bowl metal or glass, not the bottle’s plastic.
How to use a weed pen
“Weed pen” can mean three different devices.
Cartridge (cart) pens. A prefilled oil cartridge screws onto a battery, usually a 510-thread. Some fire when you draw. Others use a button, often turned on with five quick clicks. Take a slow, steady 2- to 3-second draw, then your fresh-air breath.
Our guide on how to use a 510 battery covers voltage settings, which matter: too high burns the oil and makes a harsh hit. Buy carts from licensed sources only. The 2019 outbreak of vaping lung injuries (EVALI) was mainly linked to vitamin E acetate in illicit THC cartridges.
Dab pens. These have a refillable chamber for wax or other concentrates. You load a small amount, heat it, and draw. See how to use a dab pen for the steps.
Dry-herb vaporizers. These heat ground flower without burning it, usually somewhere between about 320°F and 430°F. The vapor is gentler than smoke and smells much less. Lower temperatures tend to keep more terpene flavor, and higher ones produce denser vapor.
Draw slower than you would on a pipe. Our portable vape picks are a good starting point.
How to consume wax
Cannabis wax is a concentrate, and concentrates commonly test several times stronger than flower. Treat your first dab as a much larger dose than a bong hit, because it usually is.
There are three ways to use it:
- A dab pen. The easiest and most controlled option (see above).
- A dab rig. Heat the nail with a torch, or use an e-nail (electric nail). Let it cool to a moderate temperature, add a rice-grain-sized amount of wax with a dab tool, and inhale slowly as it vaporizes. Many people prefer lower-temperature dabs for flavor and less harshness.
- Topping a bowl. Add a small amount on top of flower in a pipe or bong. It’s simple, but much of the concentrate burns rather than vaporizes.
If you’re new to cannabis, don’t start with wax.
How to smoke weed without papers or a pipe
If you have flower and nothing to smoke it with, a few improvised options work. There are more in our tricks for smoking without papers or a pipe.
- Apple pipe. Push a pen or skewer down through the top of an apple to about the center. Push another in from the side to meet it. Carve a small bowl at the top and poke a thumb-sized carb nearby. Fruit and vegetables are the safest improvised material.
- Water bottle bong. See the bong section above.
- Corn husk or a clean leaf wrap. It works in a pinch, but burns unevenly.
- Pre-roll cones. If you have cones but can’t roll, you only need to pack a pre-roll cone.
Avoid aluminum foil, soda cans, plastic, and printed paper (magazines, receipts, book pages). Heating them gives off fumes from metal, coatings, and inks you don’t want in your lungs.
With truly nothing, you realistically can’t smoke. That’s where a dry-herb vape or an edible makes more sense. Edibles are much slower and harder to dose, so read up on dosing edibles accurately first.
How to smoke weed for the first time
The goal of a first session is a mild effect, not testing your limits.
- Choose milder flower if you can. Lower-THC flower, or a balanced THC:CBD product, is gentler. Labels like indica and sativa are unreliable predictors of how a strain will feel. Here’s why, in sativa vs. indica.
- Use a pre-roll, a one-hitter, or a dry-herb vape. They’re the easiest to control.
- Take one small puff, then wait 10 to 15 minutes. Inhaled cannabis starts working within minutes. Effects usually peak within about 30 minutes and fade over roughly 2 to 4 hours. If you feel nothing after 15 minutes, take one more small puff. Our guide on how to dose marijuana goes deeper.
- Set the scene. Somewhere familiar, with someone you trust, with nothing important to do afterward.
- Keep water and a snack nearby. Dry mouth and the munchies are both common.
Some people feel little or nothing the first time. Often that comes down to inhaling technique, so check the steps above before reaching for more.
If you take too much, it passes. Greening out can bring anxiety, a racing heart, dizziness, or nausea. Sit or lie down somewhere calm, sip water, eat something light, and give it time. Get medical help for chest pain, trouble breathing, or symptoms that keep getting worse.
How to smoke weed without coughing
Some coughing is normal, especially at first. It doesn’t make you higher, though. It just means the smoke irritated your airway. To cut it down:
- Take smaller hits. This makes the biggest difference.
- Always use the fresh-air breath. It cools and dilutes the smoke.
- Don’t hold it in. Holding only adds irritation.
- Cool the smoke. Water pipes, longer pipes, and dry-herb vapes are all easier on the throat than a hot joint or a dirty bowl.
- Keep your gear clean. Old resin tastes harsh.
- Check the flower. Poorly dried or cured cannabis burns harsh no matter how you smoke it.
- Sip water between hits. Warm tea afterward helps too.
A cough that lasts for days, or wheezing, is worth taking seriously. If you have asthma or another lung condition, talk to a doctor before smoking.
How to smoke weed without the smell (and inside)
Burning flower always makes odor, but how long it lingers varies a lot by method.
- Switch methods. Dry-herb vapes and cart pens leave far less lingering smell than joints or bongs.
- Use a sploof. It’s a tube you exhale through, with an activated-carbon filter at the end. Store-bought versions with replaceable carbon work better than the toilet-paper-roll-and-dryer-sheet DIY.
- Ventilate. Open a window and point a fan outward. Smoke near the exhaust, not in the middle of the room.
- Keep sessions small. A one-hitter makes less smoke than a joint.
- Store it sealed. Glass jars or smell-proof weed bags keep your stash from announcing itself. Wash your hands and air out your clothes afterward.
For more, see how to hide the smell of cannabis.
Before smoking inside, check your lease or building rules. Many rentals and multi-unit buildings ban it even where cannabis is legal.
Think about who else shares the air, too. Research on secondhand cannabis smoke is still developing, but kids, pets, and people with lung conditions shouldn’t be in a smoky room.
Smoking with others
In a group, whoever brought or rolled the weed usually lights it and takes the first hit. Take a hit or two and pass it on. Don’t hold a joint through a long story. Don’t share pieces when you’re sick. And never push someone to take more than they want.
Safety and legal basics
- Know your local law. Adult-use cannabis is legal in many US states, generally for adults 21 and over, but it’s still federally illegal and illegal in many other places. Public smoking is often banned even where possession is legal.
- Don’t drive high. Canada’s Lower-Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines recommend waiting at least 6 hours after using cannabis, and longer if you still feel impaired.
- Avoid mixing substances. Alcohol plus cannabis makes nausea and dizziness much more likely.
- Talk to a clinician first if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, take prescription medication, or have a personal or family history of psychosis.
- Buy regulated products. Licensed flower and carts are tested for potency and contaminants.
Smoking weed well has less to do with the perfect piece than with the basics: a loose pack, a gentle draw, a fresh-air breath, a short hold, and patience between hits. Get those right and every method gets easier.
