Medterra has become a hot name in the CBD industry recently, due to its wide range of products made from organic hemp grown in Kentucky and are guaranteed THC-free.

All of their oils are “ultra broad spectrum” and the company says they use the entire hemp plant, which in addition to CBD provides not only CBG, CBN, CBC, and CBDV, but also natural terpenes. In addition, the dropper comes with measurement markers (0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1mL) to allow for more accurate dosing.

The hemp they use is fully compliant with the Kentucky Department of Agricultural Industrial Hemp Pilot Program and is certified by the U.S. Hemp Authority. All of their products go through third-party lab testing, and the certificates of analysis are easily-accessed online. They also provide a 30-day money-back guarantee on all products.

Joy Organics Organic Full Spectrum CBD Oil Tincture Fresh Lime

  • Best for: People who want certified-organic CBD
  • CBD type: Full spectrum
  • CBD potency: 450mg to 1350mg per 1 fluid ounce bottle (30 servings per bottle)
  • Flavors: Lime

What customers say:

“Joy Organics products have really positively impacted my life. I am very careful what type of products I use on my body and for my health, and after days of research, I found Joy Organics.”

Robert

“I can’t say enough good things about this company! Their customer service is top-notch and their product has literally changed my life.”

Kathryn

Necessity may be the mother of invention, but the grandmother of invention might just be lack of sleep.

Joy Organics was founded by Joy Smith, a “grandmother and humanitarian” who happened upon CBD when she was suffering from insomnia and looking for a natural solution. She tried a wide range of CBD products with little success, and was inspired to go all in, and founded Joy Organics with her husband Todd and the rest of their family.

Their devotion is to “all natural goodness” and with nothing but USDA certified organic ingredients, Joy Organics full Spectrum CBD oil takes out some of the worry or the guessing game about what exactly is in that dropper bottle.

This tincture is alcohol-free and uses a base of organic MCT oil and organic key lime oil which users say provides a refreshing and delightful flavor. This CBD oil is crafted using full-spectrum CBD oil to provide the full range of hemp’s phytonutrients.

The company is a board member of the U.S. Hemp Roundtable and has a commitment to transparency, providing third-party lab results for all of their tinctures online

Absolute Nature Full Spectrum CBD Hemp Oil

  • Best For: People looking for calm, relaxation and exercise recovery
  • CBD type: Full spectrum
  • CBD potency: Available in 30ml bottles, containing 1000mg CBD
  • Flavors: Natural (vegan and cruelty free)
  • Other ingredients: MCT (Fractionated Coconut Oil), Organic CBD Hemp Extract
  • Special certifications: USDA Organic

What customers are saying:

“Tried the absolute CBD 1000 after using a drug store brand first, what a difference. Drug store brand tasted like motor oil, absolute has a very mild mint flavor. And within a week my back pain has improved over the relief I was getting from previous brand. I will recommend Absolute to any one experiencing chronic pain.”

George

“I have COPD with Emphysema so my energy level is so low. I’ve been using the CBD oil about a month and have seen a difference in my energy levels. It shipped out extremely fast as well.”

Michelle

Absolute Nature prides itself on providing 100% natural and organic products, and this top-quality, full-spectrum CBD oil is no exception. It contains a high amount of CBD, as well as other naturally-occurring cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids and plant proteins.

The oil is third-party lab tested, USDA Organic, non-GMO, vegan and gluten-free. The 1000mg tincture contains just two very simple yet effective ingredients: whole-plant full-spectrum extract and MCT oil for improved and maximum absorption. This simplicity means the oil is able to deliver 33mg of CBD plus 5-10mg of additional beneficial cannabinoids per ML serving.

Absolute Nature’s oil has a relatively high concentration of CBD, which means it’s more cost effective while still providing the same results. This also means it can help relieve pain and leave you feeling relaxed without any high.

Charlotte’s Web Original Formula CBD Oil

  • Best for: People who are looking for whole plant extracts made with care, and who can open the wallet a bit more than others.
  • CBD type: Whole plant
  • CBD potency: Available in 30ml or 100ml bottles, containing 50mg CBD per 1ml

What customers say:

“This is a great product. I just wish it wasn’t so expensive.”

Cass V

“In this time of what seems to be never ending chaos this oil makes my life a little easier.”

Sarah C

Charlotte’s Web has for years been one of the most prominent names in the CBD world, largely due to coverage of how its products have helped children coping with severe forms of epilepsy.

The company boasts that its original formula CBD oil is “the flagship formula that started an industry.” While that’s up for debate, the oil in question is crafted through small-batch alcohol extraction using only USA grown hemp.

The company uses no dye or additives in their products, other than the carrier oils and natural flavoring. All of its products are whole-plant extracts, which means they can provide a wide variety of terpenes, flavonoids, phytocannabinoids, and essential fatty acids, the company states.

The company does have a pricing point that can be higher than much of the competition, but with that, it also provides high-quality products made with care and easily accessible third-party lab results

Sue D

Sharieta

“Boldly Holistic Hemp” is the tagline of Colorado-based Bluebird Botanicals, which produces full-spectrum hemp extracts and CBD oil “to make a happy and healthy lifestyle radically accessible to all.”

The company has an impressive list of industry certifications related to their products and their business practices, and provide easy to download COAs which are searchable by lot number online.

The company’s Hemp Complete CBD Oil is especially interesting in that it includes “an extra serving of terpenes” – the compounds that provide plants with their aroma and can have a number of effects and health benefits. The company states that by using steam distillation they can extract terpenes and other sexntivit molecules that could otherwise be lost.

This Bluebird Botanicals product appears to be a rather unique combination of full-spectrum CBD that makes sure to top off the mix with an extra helping of what makes hemp special.

That said though, the oil doesn’t have any sweetener or flavorings, and may have a somewhat “natural” flavor according to Bluebird Botanicals.

Laura

cbdMD says that it seeks to “make everyday wellness support accessible to everyone,” and they do provide a truly impressive range of CBD potency – ranging from 300mg per bottle to 7500mg CBD.

The company has made a point of partnering with athletes – including big-name MMA fighters, surfers, skateboarders, golfers, and more – perhaps in order to forge a company image that screams – “CBD is about wellness, but not just the spa day new agey type, now check out this kickflip.”

Their CBD oil tincture comes in four flavors and uses broad-spectrum CBD that is made from USA hemp and guaranteed THC-free. The company provides a 60-day 100% satisfaction guarantee and free shipping for US orders over $79.95.

US Hemp Authority certified, B Corp certified. Vegan, gluten-free, free of parabens, and 8 major allergens.

What customers say:

Kelsey Kabonick

“Makes you chill whenever you’re spazzin’ out! Love it!”

Leanna

Sunday Scaries is a light-hearted CBD company that promotes itself as the answer when life throws you some curveballs – or hangovers – and you just, totally cannot deal.

But beyond the image and the vibes, Sunday Scaries provides a broad spectrum CBD tincture at a reasonable price that comes with added Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D3 and is produced in facilities that adhere to a host of industry certification standards.

This particular Sunday Scaries CBD oil tincture is a bit more limited than others – it only comes in one size, a one-ounce bottle with 500mg of CBD, and there is only one flavor, fruit punch. That said, with an estimated 30mg CBD per dropper dose it definitely provides a generous portion of CBD, and it appears to be a reasonable option for people who want to try CBD or are looking for a go-to elixir when they need the extra motivation but don’t want to invest in a whole array of CBD treatments and concoctions.

CBDistillery Full Spectrum CBD Oil Tincture

What customers say:

Crystal M

“A great product I take it every morning.”

Meryl S

CBDistillery described their company as being committed to “providing customers with honestly labeled, high quality hemp-derived CBD products – without any gimmicks.”

They also purport to be the “leader of the #CBDMOVEMENT,” which may perhaps sound like a gimmick but according to the company it entails “providing the masses easy access to hemp-derived CBD products, widespread education, the latest industry research, and verified consumer testimonials. so perhaps take that with a grain of salt.”

The company goes out of its way to make packaging that is clear and informational, providing insight into CBD and what the tinctures contain. Each product also has a QR code that can be scanned in order to access third-party test results carried out on that specific product batch.

This CBD tincture contains no additives other than the natural coconut oil used as its base, and it includes natural terpenes to help provide the holistic CBD effect.

Robin

Founded in 2014, Lazarus Naturals states that it is devoted to “making CBD products that are both effective and affordable,” in order to remove the barriers to the benefits of CBD.

The company portrays itself as very socially-conscious, with a spirit of giving back to their community as well as providing up to 60% of their products to veterans, people with disabilities, and those of limited means.

But what about the oil itself?

This particular full spectrum CBD tincture contains all organic ingredients and a wide range of bottle sizes and CBD concentrations, including an entry-level bottle that is one of the most affordable in the CBD market.

All of their test results are easily accessed online for anyone looking to learn more.

NuLeaf Full Spectrum Hemp CBD Oil

  • Best for: People willing to pay a little extra for a premium CBD oil
  • CBD type: Full spectrum
  • CBD potency: Bottles contain concentrations ranging from 300mg to 6,000mg CBD each.

Lynne J

“This is the best CBD oil I’ve used, backed up by a certificate of analysis and Good Manufacturing Practices ensures you’re buying the best product for your money. Customer Service is always great!”

Maria B

NuLeaf is one of the most reviewed and best rated CBD brands online, which is no surprise considering the company’s reputation for quality.

NuLeaf uses organic hemp grown in Colorado, and the company claims that their CO2 extraction process retains not only more terpenes and cannabinoids, but also Vitamin B, Vitamin D, Zinc, and omega fatty acids. This is in addition to a wider range of cannabinoids including CBC, CBG, and CBN.

They also offer full spectrum Pet CBD, and many dog owners swear by it. (The dogs have not issued a written response).

The company states on their website that “transparency is key,” and provides easily accessible lab tests online

One thing to consider with NuLeaf though is the relatively high price. For instance, a single 15ml bottle of 900mg CBD oil is priced at $99 on the company website, significantly higher than much of the competition.

Holmes Organic CBD Oil Tinctures

  • Best for: People interested in supporting a minority-owned CBD company
  • CBD type: Full spectrum
  • CBD potency: Bottles contain concentrations ranging from 450mg CBD to 900mg per one fluid ounce bottle

Chloe

“This is the best CBD oil I’ve used, backed up by a certificate of analysis and Good Manufacturing Practices ensures you’re buying the best product for your money. Customer Service is always great!”

Maria B

Holmes Organics was founded by former college football player Cory Holmes, who according to the company, suffered from stress and anxiety caused by a variety of incidents in his life including concussions while playing football and close exposure to gun violence.

Today his mission is to “help people cope with stress, chronic pain, and more by creating the most bioavailable broad-spectrum cannabinoid products on the market, all at a price people can afford.”

This particular oil is an unflavored, certified organic tincture that contains no additives other than extra virgin olive oil – with absolutely no THC.

The company also provides access to test results which can be viewed online, though the company’s website is rather threadbare and could use more informative content about the company and its products.

Zatural CBD Oil Natural Drops

  • Best for: People looking for an affordable, entry-level CBD oil
  • CBD type: Broad spectrum
  • CBD potency: Four different strengths of CBD – 10mg/serving, 33.3mg/serving, 50mg/serving, 100 mg/serving.
  • Flavors: Natural
  • Other ingredients: Organic hemp seed oil
  • Special certifications: US Hemp Authority Certification

What customers say:

“Great product!”

Diane B

“A great product I take it every morning.”

Meryl S

Zatural provides a very wide range of hemp-based products and for those looking for CBD oil, they provide affordable pricing that can make the decision on whether or not to try CBD much easier.

The company describes its products as “doctor formulated,” and states that everything they make is cruelty-free, gluten-free, organically grown, and covered under a 60-day money-back guarantee.

The pricing on the entry-level Zatural CBD oil drops is some of the cheapest in the industry, though at the lowest price point the amount of CBD per serving (10mg) is significantly lower than that of many competitors. Those who are looking to spend more have the option of going as high as 100mg per serving – through the oil bottles at that concentration are far more expensive.

The company also provides a handy CBD dosing chart on their website, as well as easy access to third party lab results. And unlike many competitors, they have no sweeteners or non-hemp additives.

How we make our selection

When deciding on the top CBD oils, we looked at a number of criteria. Keeping in mind the fact that regulation of CBD products is still in its infancy, it’s advisable to exercise some caution when shopping around. Each product in this article:

  • has a Certificate of Authority (COA) that is easily accessible online
  • contains no more than 0.3 percent THC
  • is GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) certified
  • is free of genetically modified ingredients
  • passed tests for pesticides, heavy metals, and mold

As a part of our selection process, we also check that the CBD brand:

  • has earned a trustworthy reputation in the industry
  • provides easily-accessible documentation attesting to its lab testing, safety standards, and purity of their products
  • provides a money-back-guarantee
  • provides good customer service

Lastly, we also listened to consumers and looked at product reviews to find the top-rated CBD oils and see what people said after trying them.

What should you look for when purchasing CBD?

Looking beyond the sleek packaging and brand messaging that often seems to have been formulated by technicians who work in the field of advanced spa sciences, one will find certain terms repeating themselves time and time again: isolates, full vs broad-spectrum, and whole plant extracts.

But what do these terms mean? Basically, they have to do with the makeup of the hemp plant – which includes far more than just CBD. The hemp plant also produces other active ingredients like terpenes and flavonoids, which can have a host of therapeutic benefits.

CBD products that are marketed as “full-spectrum” contain some amount of all of the components of hemp, including trace amounts of THC (though less than 0.3% according to federal law), and cannabinoids such as CBG and CBN. Broad-spectrum CBD oils, on the other hand, contain no THC, though they typically include a wide range of cannabinoids and terpenes and not just CBD. This brings us to CBD isolates – which are just what they sound like: pure, isolated CBD which is extracted from the plant with only trace amounts of any other cannabinoids or terpenes.

Which is the better option? There isn’t a single right or wrong answer to that question, though you might want to consider what’s known as “the Entourage Effect” when making your purchase. The theory behind the entourage effect is that when used in whole plant form, all of the various components in hemp from cannabinoids to terpenes, work together and amplify the effects of one another. If for whatever reason you can’t or don’t want to risk ingesting even minute amounts of THC, then broad-spectrum CBD or CBD isolates are your best choice.

What is CBD?

The hemp plant has more than 500 chemicals, and at least 144 of these are what are referred to as “cannabinoids.” These include the two most famous – Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD).

Plant-based cannabinoids – known as “phytocannabinoids” – interact with the receptors that control a fascinating system in the human body known as the Endocannabinoid System (ECS).

While it may not be a household name, the Endocannabinoid System regulates a vast array of functions in the human body, ranging from appetite to memory and learning, pain, sleep, and the immune system, to name only a few. The fact that so many of the chemicals in hemp interact with this crucial system is what makes it such a promising medicinal plant.

CBD is one of the phytocannabinoids that interact with the ECS, without producing intoxicating effects.

Manufacturers use hemp for their extraction of CBD because it has extremely low levels of THC and typically high levels of CBD. The hemp plant has traditionally been used for all types of purposes that have nothing to do with any sort of intoxicating effects. These include the production of fiber for textiles, seeds for the production of oils and food and nutritional supplements, and medicinal products crafted using the plant’s flowers.

CBD extracts are made using a variety of methods and solvents. These include C02, ethanol, butane, and isopropyl alcohol extraction. In most cases, gas or a solvent is pumped into a chamber with the hemp, and then the solvent or gas is removed, leaving behind the CBD and other cannabinoids.

What are the Health Benefits of CBD?

Disclaimer: Research performed on CBD has been performed on CBD isolates, and whatever the results of these studies, it’s important to note that ultimately each person is unique and their body may react differently to CBD than someone else.

CBD has already shown to be effective in treating pediatric epilepsy, including Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and Dravet Syndrome. In fact, the first cannabinoid-derived product approved by the Food and Drug Administration is the CBD-based medication Epidolex, which is used to treat children suffering from these two conditions.

But while Epidolex is the only cannabinoid-based medicine to gain FDA approval, research has shown that CBD could potentially have other health benefits and therapeutic applications.

These include:

  • PainA 2012 study found evidence that could indicate that cannabinoids can suppress inflammatory and neuropathic pain. A study from 2014 found clinically important improvements” in pain and sleep quality in patients that used a CBD/THC spray.
  • Anxiety: Researchers in 2015 stated that the evidence indicates that CBD “has considerable potential as a treatment for multiple anxiety disorders.” Researchers who carried out an earlier study in 2011 stated that the effects of a single dose of CBD “is a promising indication of a rapid onset of therapeutic effect in patients with SAD (Social Anxiety Disorder).
  • Inflammatory Conditions: Research has shown that cannabinoids “have been shown to regulate the tissue response to excessive inflammation in the colon,” and that this suggests that modulation of the ECS “might be a promising therapeutic tool for the treatment of several diseases characterized by inflammation of the GI tract.” Other inflammatory conditions that patients use CBD to treat include Rheumatoid ArthritisMultiple Sclerosis, and Hepatitis.
  • Insomnia: Many patients use CBD to help them get a good night’s sleep, and while the researchers behind a 2017 study said that while research on the matter is still in its infancy, preliminary research suggests that CBD “may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of insomnia.”

The list of health conditions that could potentially be alleviated through the use of CBD is significantly longer, but it is important to keep in mind that researchers are adamant that much more clinical study needs to be carried out on the matter. In addition, every patient’s body is different, and it is best to consult with a physician before beginning any treatment program.

Hemp Oil vs Hemp Seed Oil

Though at first glance, these two terms sound quite similar, hemp oil and hemp seed oil are actually very different.

Hemp seed oil is an oil produced by cold-pressing hemp seeds, similar to the production of grape seed or sunflower oil. Hemp seed oil is not a medicinal CBD oil, rather, it is an oil made from hemp seeds that can be used as a food additive or health supplement. Hemp oil, on the other hand, is a term used to describe the full or broad spectrum oils made from the hemp plant, as well as the oils that include CBD isolate mixed with a carrier oil.
