Getting the right answers in your cannabis journey can be tricky. But with The Cannigma’s Ask the Expert, you can find questions from readers like you, answered by a real cannabis pharmacist.
Question: When making gummies can I substitute infused vegetable oil for coconut oil?
Regarding your question about the use of oils other than coconut to make cannabis infusions, the simple answer is – sure! Use whatever oil you have available or can tolerate. Depending on what you’re using the infused oil for, we usually recommend MCT oil, olive oil, or coconut oil.
MCT oil and coconut oil are often preferred in the industry because they infuse the cannabinoids effectively, and also have a very long shelf life compared to many other oils (especially those rich in omega 3’s like olive oil or hemp seed oil).
These oils are not special, as basically any oil can be used to extract and deliver cannabinoids. But do note that the oil you choose can have an impact on the taste, texture, and storage ability of your homemade gummy.
The oil you choose may also have some minor effects on the potency of the oil you’re making. However since this is home extraction, there are too many variables to consider to truly know how strong our oil is without testing it. For that reason, always start low and go slow when trying a new product.
