Grav Classic Spoon – No fuss, just the classic glass “spoon” pipe

Price: $
Material: Scientific glass
Size: 4 inches long
Usage:  Dry herb
Special design features: ash catching mouthpiece, wide range of colors

Why overthink things? This classic spoon glass pipe from Grav hits all the right notes, and could easily be your go-to pipe without needing any bells or whistles. Available in a variety of colors, it’s a very affordable pipe made of scientific glass with a special inverted mouthpiece to reduce the amount of ash that makes its way to your mouth as well as a large bowl with a carb on its left side. And if it’s not quite big enough, the company also makes a 6 inch version

Hemper Color Changing Pipe – The classic glass spoon pipe – with a twist

Price: $
Material: Borosilicate glass
Size: 5.5 inches long
Usage: Dry herb
Special design features: Changes color with time, easy grip for holding

Usually with glass pipes, “color changing” just means that the pipe turned black after the chamber was gunked up with resin. This spoon pipe from Hemper takes things to a whole different direction though, with a color scheme that changes the more you use it. But how does it actually work? As good as you’d expect from a well-crafted, sturdy, 5.5 inch glass spoon pipe – that didn’t forget to include form along with function.

The Genius Pipe – Smoke like a genius

Price: $$$
Material: Anodized aluminum
Size: 6 x 1.5 x 0.3 inches (available also in “mini size,” which is 5 x 1.25 x 0.3 inches)
Usage: Dry herb or concentrates (when using the “G-stone” insert)
Special design features: Built-in cooling filter, sleek and slim design, perfect travel size, easy to clean

The Genius Pipe is a unique and extremely cool pipe that also makes a great conversation starter if you bring it out at a party. Built with “Zen Design” in mind (according to the company), it is six inches of sleek, thin anodized aluminum that makes it extra discrete and easy to travel with. The pipe was designed with a patented “dimple design” that creates millions of micro vortices that cool down the smoke before it ever hits your mouth. This can make a smoother, more flavorful smoke, and also the inside of the pipe doubles as a grinder. Not only that, with the “G-Stone” accessory you can also vape concentrates with the pipe, by placing the stone in the bowl and dropping the concentrate on it. Finally, the whole thing breaks apart for easy cleaning, and seals up quite nicely with a bowl already packed, to make it a perfect pipe for any genius about to hit the road.

The Session Goods Pipe – Compact, classy, and ready to go

Price: $$
Material: Tinted black borosilicate glass
Size: 3.7 x 1.5 inches (bowl size is 0.86 inches and the glass is 0.10 inches thick)
Usage:  Dry herb
Special design features: Extra sturdy thick glass and included carrying case, ash catching indent near mouthpiece, flat end – can stand up straight

The thoughtfulness and heavy-duty build that went into the Session Goods pipe is truly impressive.

Each of the company’s glass pipes are made of 2.5mm thick, tinted black borosilicate glass, with an ash catching indent and a flat end so it can stand straight up on a table. Each pipe also comes with a colored silicone carry sleeve to keep the pipe safe and sound wherever you take it.

The pipe is compact at only 3.7 inches long, but not overly small. With its design and sturdy build, it’s easy to picture it as a go-to pipe for the long haul.

The Solopipe – the self-igniting pipe that’s perfect for travel

Price: $$$
Material: Stainless steel
Size: 3.5 x 1.5 x .675 inches
Usage: Dry herb
Special design features: Built-in refillable lighter, comes with cleaning tools and replaceable bowl

Lost or stolen lighters are the bane of many a cannabis smoker’s existence. And without a source of flame, even the most incredible pipe is basically a paperweight. Enter the Solopipe. This stainless steel pipe/gadget comes with a built-in, refillable and adjustable butane lighter right next to the bowl. Simply load a bowl and click on the lighter and it pulls directly into the herb.

The Solopipe also comes with a protective case, pouch, replacement screens, and cleaning tools to keep it looking like new.

And with the lighter already always in hand, the Solopipe is a great pipe for hitting the road – and hitting the pipe wherever you stop on the road.

The Pyptek Prometheus Titan – Bring fire to your world with this loveable, durable pipe fit for a titan

Price: $$$
Material: Anodized aluminum, borosilicate glass, aerospace-grade aluminum, shock absorbing gaskets
Size: 7 inches long
Usage:  Dry herb
Special design features: Extremely versatile build, replaceable bowl and stem, comes apart for easy cleaning

It happens at least once in the life of every glass pipe smoker – a careless moment of clumsiness or a sudden case of the butter fingers sends the glass pipe crashing to the floor, where it shatters into a thousand pieces.

Prepare to meet the Pyptek Prometheus Titan. This pipe/cudgel is thick and sturdy and virtually indestructible. It also has a serious heft and size to it which may have you saying “you call that a pipe? This is a pipe!”

Also, the pipe can be completely taken apart for easy cleaning.

Material: Silicone body and removable glass bowl
Size: 8 x 1.75 inches
Usage: Dry herb
Special design features: Easy to clean, durable, won’t get overly hot like other pipes

Some jobs call for a steamroller. Day in and day out, your simple glass spoon pipe should do the trick, but sometimes you’ll want a more potent and full bodied hit.

This steamroller by Aqua Works is made of heat-resistant silicone with a removable glass bowl and front side carb. It’s a cinch to clean (if it ever even gets dirty), easy to use, and virtually indestructible.

The METRO Lyte Metal Pipe puts a different spin on pipe smoking – literally. This small, portable metal pipe has a swivel action lid that is manipulated in order to expose the bowl and bring the mouthpiece into use.

Pulsar Standing Sherlock Hand Pipe – *deerstalker hat not included

Price: $
Material: Borosilicate glass
Size: 4 inches
Usage:  Dry herb
Special design features: Flat bottomed/self-standing, thick and sturdy glass, very comfortable, ergonomic design

If you’re looking to make some mysteries of your own, consider the Pulsar standing sherlock hand pipe. Something of a funky, contemporary revamp of the classic Sherlock hand pipe, it provides that draping, S shape that make sherlock pipes so fun to hit.

It is also available in a wide variety of colors, and at 4 inches of thick, colored glass, it has the size, shape, and build to be a pipe that you’ll keep by your side for a long time. It’s elementary, really.

The Journey Pipe – The perfect road trip buddy

Price: $$
Material: Zinc alloy
Size: 4 inches
Usage:  Dry herb
Special design features: Screenless and heat-resistant, magnetic locking system, silicon grip, sleek and discreet closable lid

When you cash a pipe your pocket is probably the last place you want to put it. And if you’re trying to take your pipe and some herb with you, then cramming a loaded bowl in your pocket isn’t wise either.

The Journey pipe solves this problem, and then some.

Made of a durable and very attractive zinc alloy, this pipe is screen free and uses a handy sealable bowl that locks in place with magnets. Basically, you can load up a bowl, close it, and hit the road to hit it where you see fit. And when the bowl is cashed, simply slide the lid back over.

It’s actually a very simple concept, but it’s executed perfectly with the Journey. Also, it’s heat resistant, stays cool to the touch, and delivers very cool smoke.

The different types of pipes for smoking weed

Many weed pipe smokers would tell you there are two types of pipes for smoking weed – glass and everything else. That’s obviously not the case, but there’s something to be said for the classic glass pipe.

Glass pipes

Often called a “spoon” pipe (because the shape of the round bowl and thin narrow stem resembles a spoon), glass pipes produce strong, full-bodied hits through large hollow chambers. The glass doesn’t get overly hot to the touch (at least where you’d be holding it) and when the pipe is new and not clogged with resin you can enjoy the sensation of watching it fill up with smoke and then empty as you clear the carb.

Also, glass pipes taste great and are one of the best options when you are trying out a new cannabis strain you’re excited about and want to truly experience the flavor.

While glass pipes may be the most popular, they are by no means the only type of pipe.

Metal pipes

Metal pipes are also still popular, though less so than a generation or two ago. They tend to be cheaper than glass pipes and are also much, much harder to break. They can also usually be unscrewed and broken apart for easy cleaning. The drawbacks? They get really hot, and can have this metallic taste nobody wants.

Ceramic pipes

Ceramic pipes can come in all shapes and sizes and truly provide a vessel for artistry and stoner sculpture. At their simplest, ceramic pipes are a cheap, durable option for smoking, and at their most elaborate, they are works of art that may put form before function.

Corncob pipes

We would be remiss if we did not mention the classic corncob pipe, a budget option that is far less en vogue today, and shouldn’t be your first option by any means. In fact, pipes that use corn cobs, wood, or bamboo can be effective, but you’re probably better off not using a pipe whose bowl is made of flammable organic materials.

Why use a pipe?

Your chosen smoking method is mainly a matter of taste, but there are some objective draws to pipe smoking. If you’re smoking high-grade weed, then two or three good hits could be more than enough to get you where you want to be. Loading a bowl with this much weed uses much less than would be needed to roll a joint, and may produce more or less the same intoxicating effect.

A pipe is perfect when you want to take a couple hits really quick, and don’t have the time, space, or energy to roll and smoke an entire joint. In a sense, using a pipe is better suited for those who like to smoke alone, and don’t need to make a big production out of it.

Also, like we mentioned before, a pipe can be one of the best ways to smoke weed if you’re looking to truly feel the taste and aroma of the strain, directly, without any papers or other additives. And the hits themselves? They can be especially strong and flavorful, and pack more punch than a hit from a joint.

How to use a pipe

The first step in smoking a pipe is to pack the bowl. Take some cannabis flower, you can break it up a bit or even grind it, but don’t make it too fine a grind. Take the herb and place it in the bowl, making sure it isn’t too loose or too tightly packed. If it’s too tightly packed, you won’t get a good airflow on your inhale, and if it’s too loose, you can end up with some weed in your mouth.

Once the bowl is packed, see if your pipe has a carb. Also known as the “choke,” this is a hole that you cover with your finger while you inhale, and then release your finger and keep inhaling in order to clear the smoke from the chamber.

Make sure that the carb is covered, apply a lighter flame to the bowl and inhale, pulling the flame into the weed and the smoke into your lungs. Inhale for a few seconds, release the carb, clear the chamber, and exhale. Once you do it a couple of times you should have an idea of how big a hit you need.

That’s all it takes, it really is as simple as that.
