While Charlotte’s Web made a name for itself largely for the way its products have helped children coping with severe forms of epilepsy, their CBD products are popular with all types of consumers.
“Calm” is one of three different gummies made by the brand (along with “Sleep” and “Recovery”) and it contains 75mg of lemon balm per serving, along with terpenes and flavonoids.
There is 10mg of CBD per serving – which the company says is two gummies. With only 30 gummies in the smallest container, that comes to about 15 servings per $29.99, not the cheapest option on the market.
Nonetheless, Charlotte’s Web is a CBD company that is known for its commitment to using high-quality ingredients, and according to the company, they have recently simplified the ingredients in the Calm gummies “to create a cleaner formula, focused on botanical ingredients.”

What is CBD?
There are more than 500 chemicals in cannabis plants, including two you have likely heard of – THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol).
Known as “phytocannabinoids” – these plant-based cannabinoids can activate receptors that control the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a vast system that runs through the body and regulates all types of functions ranging from appetite to memory to pain and sleep. CBD interacts with the ECS, and unlike THC, it does so without any psychotropic effect or “high.”
Flowers from the hemp plant are high in CBD with very little THC. Far from being a narcotic, the plant has been used for eons as a source of oil, fabrics, and medicine, long before anyone had heard of CBD gummies.
CBD companies create their extracts by using methods such as C02, ethanol, butane, and isopropyl alcohol extraction, which pump a gas or solvent into a container with the hemp, and then removes it, leaving behind CBD and other cannabinoids.
What are the health benefits of CBD?
Disclaimer: Most CBD research has been performed using CBD isolates, and one should always keep in mind that each person is unique and their reaction can be different than someone else’s, regardless of what the research says.
Perhaps the most well-known use of CBD has been in the treatment of severe forms of pediatric epilepsy. In fact, the first cannabinoid-derived product approved by the Food and Drug Administration was the CBD-based medication Epidolex, which is used to treat children suffering from such conditions.
And while other products have yet to be approved by the FDA, research on CBD isolate has shown that it could potentially have some health and therapeutic benefits, for instance:
- Pain: Evidence found in a 2012 study indicated that cannabinoids could potentially suppress inflammatory and neuropathic pain, while a study from 2014 found that patients coping with pain and sleep issues experienced “clinically important improvements” after using a CBD/THC spray.
- Anxiety: In 2015, researchers asserted that there is evidence to indicate that CBD “has considerable potential as a treatment for multiple anxiety disorders,” somewhat echoing the findings of a 2011 study that found that CBD could help people dealing with SAD (Social Anxiety Disorder).
- Inflammatory conditions: For gastrointestinal conditions, research has shown that cannabinoids “have been shown to regulate the tissue response to excessive inflammation in the colon.” The researchers said that this suggests that cannabinoid modulation of the ECS “might be a promising therapeutic tool for the treatment of several diseases characterized by inflammation of the GI tract.” Patients have also used CBD to treat inflammatory conditions that include Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, and Hepatitis.
- Insomnia: One of the more popular uses of CBD is in treating insomnia, and according to a 2017 study initial research suggests that CBD “may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of insomnia.”
While CBD is definitely soaring in popularity, research into its effectiveness is still somewhat in its infancy, and much more work is needed in order to determine precisely which health benefits it may have.
How to use CBD gummies
It probably goes without saying that CBD gummies aren’t the same as the gummy worms you loved when you were a kid. You’re not going to want to down a whole bag in one sitting and if you were to do so on a regular basis you’d probably need a second job judging by today’s CBD product prices.
Like any new health supplement, you’ll want to start either with the recommended product dose or perhaps half a dose, just to see how your body responds to it. Start out slow and give it a couple of days before you consider increasing your dose.
Keep in mind also that ingesting CBD in the form of a gummy will take longer to digest and kick in than if you were to consume CBD oil ingested sublingually.
Finally, and most importantly, if you are taking any other medication that could potentially have an interaction with CBD, make sure to speak to your physician first.
What should you look for when purchasing CBD?
CBD product packaging and marketing runs the gamut from minimalist and sleek to the (extremely) earnest and new agey. But when purchasing CBD, look beyond the brand’s message and pitch, and focus on the specific terms you’ll see time and time again, such as isolates, full vs broad-spectrum, and whole plant extracts.
These terms refer to the hemp used to make the CBD and whether or not it contains the full range of the plant’s potentially helpful compounds.
For instance, “full-spectrum” CBD products are made using the entire hemp plant, which means that they may contain a wide range of cannabinoids, including CBG, CBN, and even trace amounts of THC. Broad-spectrum products do not contain THC but usually include various cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids in addition to CBD. Meanwhile, CBD isolates are just that – pure CBD that has been extracted from the plant and does not include any other cannabinoids or terpenes unless they are deliberately added into the product by the company.
There is no one right or wrong answer regarding which is better. Many consumers prefer full or broad-spectrum CBD because of what is known as “the entourage effect.” This is the theory that CBD products that include a wider range of hemp’s ingredients work better than CBD alone, because the various natural compounds and chemicals increase the effects of one another.
