Is Weed Legal in Jordan

No, weed is not legal in Jordan for any purpose, recreational or medical. Cannabis is a banned narcotic under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law No. 23 of 2016, and using or possessing it can bring prison and a fine.

A 2021 amendment softened one thing: a first personal-use offence no longer leaves a criminal record. This guide covers Jordan’s cannabis laws, the penalties, CBD and what visitors need to know.

Is weed legal in Jordan for recreational use?

Recreational weed is illegal in Jordan, and there is no amount you can carry without breaking the law. The 2016 narcotics law, as amended by Law No. 24 of 2021, bans using, buying, possessing and acquiring cannabis for personal use.

Growing cannabis is banned too. The law allows cultivation only under a licence issued by regulation, and no such licensing scheme for cannabis is known to exist. There is no legal market, no tolerated quantity and no private-use exception.

Enforcement is active. In August 2026 the Public Security Directorate destroyed drugs seized in more than a thousand cases, including hundreds of kilograms of cannabis.

What are the penalties under Jordan weed laws?

Penalties under Jordan weed laws split sharply between personal use and trafficking. Personal use is a crime punished with prison and a fine, while trafficking carries long sentences and, in the most serious cases, the death penalty.

The 2021 amendment changed how first-time users are treated. A first conviction for personal use does not count as a criminal record or a security record. Courts can also order treatment in a specialist centre instead of punishment. Anyone who asks for treatment before they are arrested is not prosecuted at all.

This is not decriminalisation. The offence still exists, the penalty still applies, and the protection covers a first offence only.

Trafficking is treated far more severely. The law provides for long sentences, and its death penalty applies to certain aggravated trafficking crimes. Drug cases are heard in the State Security Court, according to the US State Department.

Is medical marijuana legal in Jordan?

No. Medical marijuana is not legal in Jordan, and there is no medical cannabis programme, patient registry or prescribing route. No doctor in Jordan can lawfully prescribe cannabis for a medical condition.

The narcotics law does contain a general power to license controlled plants by regulation. No regulation using that power for medical cannabis or hemp has been found, so it remains a theoretical door rather than a working route.

Is CBD legal in Jordan?

There is no published Jordanian position on CBD, and no legal route for CBD products has been identified.

In practice, treat CBD as covered by the general ban on cannabis and its derivatives. The US State Department states plainly that marijuana and its derivatives are illegal in Jordan. A CBD oil or vape bought legally at home should not be packed for the trip.

Can you smoke weed in Jordan as a tourist?

No. Visitors are subject to exactly the same narcotics law as residents, and there is no tourist allowance or tolerated setting anywhere in the country.

The UK Foreign Office says in its Jordan travel advice that a conviction for possessing, using or trafficking drugs can mean a lengthy prison sentence and a heavy fine. The US State Department warns that Jordan has strict drug laws and enforces them readily.

The State Department also notes that people accused of drug offences can be held for up to two weeks without charge. The first-offence record protection does nothing to prevent that detention, so even a small amount can derail a trip.

The bottom line on cannabis in Jordan

Weed is illegal in Jordan for recreational and medical use, and CBD has no recognised legal status. Personal use is punished with prison and a fine, although a first offence since 2021 leaves no criminal record and can lead to treatment instead.

Trafficking carries long sentences and, in aggravated cases, death. For visitors, the only safe choice is to leave cannabis and CBD products at home.
