Best CBN + CBD + THC gummies for sleep 2024

Table of contents

With legalization sweeping the world in recent years, cannabis enthusiasts and seekers of alternative wellness solutions are increasingly turning to edibles as a convenient and effective sleep aid. Gummies are among the most popular and accessible forms of cannabis edibles, and come in a wide range of formulations designed to address specific needs. And with all those choices, it can be difficult and confusing to find a product that works for you.

With this in mind, we’ve partnered with MoreBetter, creators of the Releaf App, to gather and analyze real-world data (RWD) on a variety of cannabis and cannabinoid products and use cases. Most recently, we surveyed Cannigma users on their experience with a number of CBN + CBD + THC gummies designed for sleep – and the results were impressive to say the least. The results on the list below are informed by these research efforts – so you can make decisions about your health armed with science and data – rather than fake reviews and empty marketing claims.

How cannabis can improve sleep and overall wellness

Cannabis has served as a remedy for sleep troubles for hundreds or perhaps even thousands of years. Many cannabis consumers laud the plant’s tendency to bring on a peaceful slumber – and indeed our recent data collection effort found that participants reported an average of at least an hour more sleep when using CBD + CBN + THC gummies for three weeks. However, as is the case with all things related to cannabis, determining the dose and method of consumption that suits your needs can take some consideration and a bit of trial and error.

When it comes to sleep, edibles are arguably the most effective consumption method. The delayed onset and extended duration of effect make edibles an ideal addition to your bedtime routine. But why does cannabis work so well for promoting sleep? There are a couple of compelling reasons.

Firstly, the endocannabinoid system (ECS) plays a significant role in regulating sleep and your circadian rhythm. This means that the right formulation of cannabinoids can potentially interact with your ECS to get your sleep in order – but it also means that the wrong dose, at the wrong time, or even the wrong cannabinoid could lead to disrupted sleep. It’s a two-way street. 1

Secondly, THC is renowned for its sedative properties and its proven impact on sleep, as it can potentially help you drift off to sleep swiftly and increase the duration of the deep sleep phase. In lower doses, like the FOCL Deep Sleep gummies and Slumber Deep Zzzs featured on this list, THC is often effective at reducing anxiety, which could be beneficial for those with racing thoughts before bedtime (though high doses tend to have the opposite effect). It is worth noting that THC has stirred some controversy when it comes to sleep, with certain scientific studies suggesting it may negatively affect sleep quality, especially with chronic use. 2

Then there’s CBD, which you could be forgiven for thinking can solve basically any medical ailment if you believed the flood of questionable marketing claims out there. But it is true that CBD may also influence your sleep patterns. While preliminary scientific findings have suggested potential benefits of CBD for sleep quality, the number of high-quality trials is limited, and most positive outcomes have been observed when CBD is combined with THC.

Apart from THC and CBD, sleep gummies often contain other active ingredients, including melatonin and another increasingly popular cannabinoid called CBN (cannabinol).

Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced in the body and commonly used as a sleep aid, readily available in the vitamins and supplements section of pharmacies around the world. Its primary role is to regulate the sleep-wake cycle, making it a logical active ingredient in sleep aids. However, the scientific evidence on the use of melatonin alone is shaky, with research suggesting that it only changes time to fall asleep by a few minutes. 3

CBN, on the other hand, is a minor cannabinoid regularly being added to cannabis products marketed for sleep. CBN results from the natural degradation of THC over time, due to factors such as heat or light exposure. Despite some marketing claims, research suggests that CBN isn’t particularly sedating on its own and doesn’t have a significant impact on sleep. However, there is evidence to suggest that when used alongside other cannabinoids like THC, CBN can enhance sedation and potentially extend the duration of sleep. And indeed, the data we gathered by surveying consumers supported this hypothesis. 4

Choosing the right CBN + CBD + THC gummy formulation

When it comes down to it, selecting the ideal CBN + CBD + THC gummy formulation for your needs is a personal journey – even if you’re armed with data. Here are some factors to consider when making your choice:

  • Cannabinoid ratios: Pay attention to the ratio of CBN, CBD, and THC in the gummies. A higher CBN content is generally associated with more sedative effects, while CBD provides a calming influence. THC can induce relaxation but can also have psychotropic effects, and the wrong dose could actually contribute to trouble falling asleep.
  • Melatonin content: Decide whether you want your gummies to include melatonin. Melatonin can be particularly beneficial for individuals with sleep disorders. However, if you prefer a purely cannabinoid-based experience, there are options available without melatonin. Also, since melatonin can affect the sleep cycle, you wouldn’t want to consume a melatonin product in the middle of the day. Taking it around a regularly scheduled bedtime is ideal.
  • Full spectrum vs. isolate: Full-spectrum gummies contain a range of cannabinoids and terpenes, which can produce what’s known as the “entourage effect,” enhancing the potential benefits of each compound. Isolate gummies contain only a single cannabinoid, such as CBD or CBN, offering a more controlled experience.
  • Price: Needless to say, you’ll need to consider your budget when choosing gummies. Prices can vary significantly depending on brand and potency.
