The 5 best cannabis lubes for 2024

Table of contents

Who doesn’t want great sex? Incorporating cannabis into the bedroom is just one way you can spice up your sex life. Weed lube won’t get you high, but it may help you be more present, elevate your senses, and increase your pleasure.

Why lube is important

Proper lubrication can increase sexual pleasure for both men and women. It decreases pain associated with sex, increases enjoyment, and generally makes sex more comfortable.

While vaginal dryness is often thought of as a problem for older women, it affects nearly 20% of women under the age of 50. Bringing lube into the bedroom is an easy way to keep things moving smoothly (literally). A 2009 survey of over 2,400 women found 70% reported increased enjoyment and comfort when lube was used during sex.

But lube isn’t just for women – lube can also increase pleasure in men with partners of both genders. A 2014 study found that 70% of men had used lube before and they commonly listed enhanced comfort and pleasure as a reason.

In short, if you like sex, lube can make it even better.

Why cannabis can be a beneficial ingredient in lube

Lube is important – but do you really need weed in it? Can’t you just smoke a joint and call it good?

Sure, you could – and it may increase your pleasure (particularly for women). But did you know that your endocannabinoid system has receptors on the penis, vagina, labia, and clitoris?

These receptors are activated in one of two ways: by endocannabinoids, and by cannabis. Topical cannabis applications like lube cut out the middle man (absorbing in your bloodstream) and deliver the ECS-stimulating cannabinoids directly to the intimate parts of your body, exactly where you want them.

  • CBD and THC are vasodilators, which increase blood flow. Increasing blood flow is a crucial part of the arousal process- both the penis and vagina engorge with blood prior to sex.
  • CBD and THC have dose-dependent anti-anxiety effects that can also help you relax. Being in a relaxed state of mind is important for sexual pleasure and reaching orgasm.
  • CBD and THC are anti-inflammatory, which may reduce pain associated with sex, particularly for women.

The difference between THC and CBD lubes

Although THC is intoxicating and CBD is not, applying cannabis lube won’t get you high either way. Topical application of cannabinoids activates the ECS receptors on or under the skin, but they don’t reach the bloodstream.

If you live in a state where recreational cannabis is legal, you’ll likely see THC lubes on the shelf alongside CBD lubes. Finding THC lube is state dependent, but CBD lube can be shipped across the country. Both cannabinoids produce similar sensations when applied to the genitals, but what state you’re in is the main factor in determining which kind you’ll be able to buy.

Oil versus water-based lubes

Commercial lubes can be made of many things, but most lubes are formulated from an oil or a water base. Oil-based lubes can feel slicker and last longer, but it’s important to note that they are not latex-friendly. Oil-based lubes can degrade or break down a latex barrier, so they shouldn’t be used with condoms or with certain sex toys. Also keep in mind that while oil-based lubes are easier to spread, they are a bit messier than water-based lubes, which don’t tend to stain sheets or clothing.

Water-based lubes feel similar to “natural” lubrication, and are more moisturizing than oil-based lubes. They may feel tackier and dry quicker, but they are safe to use with anything made of latex, including condoms.

Making your own cannabis lube

If you don’t want to buy a commercially-made cannabis lube, you can make your own at home.

Making lube at home may sound like a complicated process, but it’s actually quite simple. All you need for this weed lube recipe is two ingredients and a slow cooker. This canna-lube recipe calls for THC flower, but you can just as easily swap in CBD flower if you prefer.

It’s important to use flower, because many tinctures and extracts are made with ingredients you don’t want on your genitals, such as alcohol and essential oils, which can be irritating to sensitive areas.

The best! Love love love this oil! I love everything her highness has but after years of using multiple enhancements & oils, this product works! No bull crap! I am so happy I found out about her highness. It’s been a great addition.

I love toys. They are sensual. They are fun. However, when it comes to the big ‘O’ — only one vibrator would do. And it looked like a large hair dryer. Not sexy. Then I tried this. Delicious in form (oil) and function (oh yeah) – and I am GIMMICK FREE! About to order 3 more for the road. Lordy, it works!
