Ask The Green Nurse – A Badge of Courage: Navigating Stigma as a Medical Cannabis Patient

Table of contents

The decision to use medical cannabis is often deeply personal and rooted in a long and winding medical journey. For many, it is not the first line of treatment but a vital lifeline discovered after countless trials with conventional therapies that failed to provide relief. And yet, despite its proven therapeutic benefits, medical cannabis patients continue to face stigma, judgment, and misunderstanding.

It’s a heavy burden for those who have simply made the choice to prioritize their health and well-being. But in the face of societal misconceptions and outdated beliefs, a simple, empowering mantra emerges as a rallying cry for those navigating this path with courage and resilience: “Let Them.”

This blog explores the stigma surrounding medical cannabis, the root causes of these societal biases, and, most importantly, how patients can reclaim their autonomy, dignity, and self-trust in their healing process. It’s time to shift perspectives and celebrate the strength of those who trust their bodies and choose what works for them—no matter what anyone else says.

The Weight of Stigma

For decades, cannabis has been shackled by layers of prohibition, propaganda, and prejudice. Originally revered in many ancient cultures as a powerful medicinal plant, cannabis was demonized in the 20th century due to political and social agendas. Misinformation campaigns portrayed it as a dangerous and criminal substance, a myth that has stuck stubbornly in the public consciousness even as scientific research has proven its effectiveness for a variety of conditions.

Medical cannabis patients today carry the remnants of that stigma. The judgment often looks like outdated stereotypes of the “lazy stoner” or the “addict,” labels tied more to cultural fear-mongering than to reality. It manifests in whispers, side-eyes, disapproval from loved ones, and discrimination in workplaces, healthcare settings, and communities.

What’s worse, many patients report feeling the need to justify their choices constantly—to employers, friends, family, or even their medical providers. They often conceal their use entirely for fear of being seen as unprofessional, irresponsible, or rebellious. This isolation adds an emotional and mental toll to the physical ailments they’re already battling.

Why Does the Stigma Persist?

The persistence of stigma is rooted in history and societal norms. Here’s what continues to fuel it:

  • Propaganda and Misrepresentation: For years, cannabis was wrongly classified as a dangerous drug, with peripheral associations to crime and rebellious counterculture. These narratives die hard.
  • Lack of Education: Many people still don’t understand that cannabinoids interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system to regulate functions like pain, sleep, and mood. The term “medical cannabis” isn’t enough to override misconceptions of “drug use.”
  • Cultural Biases: Patients in conservative communities or professional industries deal with an additional layer of stigma. The notion of using a plant as medicine remains difficult for some to reconcile with a pharmaceutical-driven healthcare mindset.
  • Misguided Use: With the proliferation of high THC products designed for those seeking a strong high, people can develop cannabis use disorder and this creates fear among legislators who want to ban rather than regulate.

This legacy leaves patients feeling alienated. But in every challenge lies an opportunity to reshape the narratives, educate on responsible use, and claim sovereignty over our individual health choices.

Reframing the Narrative

Here’s the truth that often gets buried under stigma and stereotypes: Medical cannabis is not a reckless choice. It is a deliberate, researched, and often life-changing decision that prioritizes healing and well-being. Reframing the narrative around cannabis requires action both on a personal and societal level.

First, we need a shift in how we talk about cannabis. The language we use to describe medical cannabis matters. Here’s how patients, advocates, and allies can reframe the conversation:

  1. Normalize Scientific Terminology – Using terms like “cannabinoid therapy,” “plant-based medicine,” or “phytotherapy” grounds the discussion in the realm of science and medicine. This moves the conversation away from dismissive stereotypes and highlights the legitimacy of this therapeutic option in its many forms and formats.
  2. Cannabis is Not One Thing – Expanding the conversation must include the use of non-psychoactive cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, CBDA, CBGA, CBN, and CBG. Dosing these formulations in tinctures, softgels, and salves is how many find deep healing. Let’s look beyond people smoking pot.
  3. Focus on Stories and Outcomes – Societal attitudes transform slowly, but personal stories are powerful. Sharing patient experiences—like a veteran using cannabinoids to treat PTSD or a grandmother walking pain-free thanks to CBD balm—brings humanity into the discussion.
  4. Challenge Misinformation –  Knowledge is a tool for change. Bust myths, correct biases, and share factual evidence whenever the opportunity arises, especially in conversations with skeptics. Every moment of education chips away at stigma.
  5. Recognize Healing as Holistic and Unique –  Remind yourself and others that healing is deeply personal. Cannabis is just one tool in a wide spectrum of medical modalities. What works for one patient may not work for another, and that diversity of choice should be celebrated, not judged.

The Empowering Mantra of “Let Them” – For patients, the weight of external judgment can feel like too much to bear. Whether it’s side-eyes in the workplace or criticism from uninformed friends, the pressure to constantly explain or defend your choices is exhausting. Enter the mantra that shifts everything: “Let them.”

  • “Let them judge.”   People will judge what they don’t understand. Their judgment often reflects their fears and conditioning, not your reality.
  • “Let them misunderstand.”   You do not owe anyone an explanation for what restores your health and quality of life.
  • “Let them project.”  Many who criticize medical cannabis come from a place of internalized bias or unresolved fears. That is theirs to process—not yours to carry.

The mantra of “Let Them” isn’t about apathy; it’s about sovereignty. It’s a reminder to protect your peace, commit to your path, and continue rising above the noise.

Practical Advice for Navigating Stigma

While the mantra offers emotional resilience, patients need concrete strategies for navigating real-world challenges. Here are actionable steps for those carrying the “scarlet letter” of cannabis use:

  1. Own Your Story – One of the most powerful ways to fight stigma is to live your truth unapologetically. While you don’t need to share every detail of your medical history with others, having a clear understanding of why you chose cannabis can help you feel more confident and grounded.  Explore Nurse Sherri’s inspiring journey with plant medicine and what brought her to cannabis nursing on her Substack, “Ask The Green Nurse”
  2. Educate Yourself & Others – Equip yourself with knowledge about cannabis medicine, including how it affects the endocannabinoid system and the specific ways it helps your condition. When faced with questions, you can speak from a place of authority and possibly turn skeptics into allies.
  3. Find Your Community – You are not alone. Surround yourself with support groups, advocacy networks, or even online forums of medical cannabis patients who share similar experiences. These communities provide strength, understanding, and collective wisdom. Check out the free plant medicine educational community space led by Registered Nurses at Holistic Caring Network.
  4. Redefine Professionalism – For those worried about workplace discrimination, understand your rights under local laws for medical cannabis. If you feel comfortable, keep a tincture on your desk, and share your story to challenge outdated workplace norms and start meaningful conversations about health and wellness.
  5.  Advocate for Policy Change – There’s strength in numbers. Joining advocacy organizations can help push for broader legal and societal acceptance of medical cannabis, ensuring patients have access without fear of criminalization or stigma.

The Power of Compassion and Acceptance

At its core, the struggle faced by medical cannabis patients reflects the broader need for compassion in healthcare and society at large. Every patient deserves dignity, autonomy, and access to the treatments that work for them—whether that’s a pharmaceutical or a plant. By normalizing medical cannabis and dismantling the stigma, we create a world where patients can focus on healing without shame or judgment.

A Call to Action

To those who use medical cannabis, remember this mantra when the weight of judgment feels too heavy to bear: “Let them.”

  • Let them misunderstand. Focus on your healing.
  • Let them judge. Their bias isn’t your burden.
  • But don’t stop healing. Because your health and well-being are what matter most.
