Dr. Matthew Elmes

Dr. Matthew Elmes is a cannabis scientist and enthusiast with deep expertise in cannabinoid science, product development, and pharmacology. He currently serves as Laboratory Director at Green Analytics, a leading cannabis testing laboratory, and is also an Adjunct Professor at Stony Brook University, where he teaches a course on the history, science and culture of cannabis. Dr. Elmes holds a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Stony Brook University, where his research focused on cannabinoid transport and metabolism, leading to over a dozen peer-reviewed publications and a granted patent. He completed postdoctoral research with Artelo Biosciences developing novel endocannabinoid- modulating drugs with potential therapeutic applications for cancer, pain and inflammation. One of his group’s endocannabinoid drugs is currently undergoing Phase I clinical trials. From 2019 to 2022, Dr. Elmes served as Scientific Director at CannaCraft, a major California cannabis manufacturer, where he led innovation and new product development for many brands and products found in the cannabis market. He is also the Founder of CannaScience Consulting, offering education initiatives and scientific guidance across multiple disciplines in the cannabis and cannabinoid industries.
